WHO Academy training course on Dual-use research and the responsible use of the life sciences
[WHO Dual-use research and the responsible use of the life sciences]
This course examines these dual-use research (DUR) issues and discusses ways to identify and mitigate potential biorisks as part of a multi-sectoral and cooperative approach across the One Health spectrum that promotes the safe, secure and responsible use of the life sciences (RULS) to prevent accidents, unanticipated and deliberate misuse of biological materials, knowledge and emerging technologies.
SUMMARY
he 2022 WHO Global guidance framework (Global guidance framework for the responsible use of the life sciences: mitigating biorisks and governing dual-use research ) for the responsible use of the life sciences calls for the implementation of measures to mitigate biorisks and safely govern dual-use research in the life sciences. This course aims to enable key stakeholders across the entire life sciences research ecosystem to identify dual-use risks and ways in which they can be minimized as both an individual and collective responsibility and provide guidance on building a robust culture of the responsible use of the life sciences. The learning objectives for this training course are to define dual-use research (DUR), dual-use research of concern (DURC), and the responsible use of the life sciences (RULS); describe the key elements of the framework used to mitigate biorisks, govern DUR and DURC, and promote a culture of responsible life sciences research; identify how stakeholders across the life sciences research ecosystem can anticipate, mitigate, and prevent biorisks and effectively govern dual-use research that may pose risks to humans, animals, plants, agriculture, or the environment; and apply knowledge gained in the course through case studies and guided questions.
